Take note all DIY Electricians
I am sure most of you are aware of this but for those of you who aren’t I thought I’d put a few words together and inform you that the law is most definitely clear when it comes to householders working on anything electrical around their home. Apart from possibly changing a light bulb, you definitely need to engage the services of a licensed electrical tradesperson to carry out this work.
With the huge array of electrical products available for purchase in hardware shops these days, it is no wonder the homeowner can wrongly believe that it is OK to undertake their own repairs, maintenance and even installations. The fact that the products are available for anyone to purchase can be misleading, but please remember, although you don’t need to be licensed to buy them, you most certainly need to be licensed to install the majority of them!
The first and most important thing to remember is that there is a real danger of causing a major accident or death as amateurs can’t begin to understand the complexities of household electrical systems. The fines for illegal work are enormous and your insurance company certainly won’t pay up if there’s evidence of illegal electrical work. You can find any number of renovating forums on the internet full of incensed outbursts from DIY ‘experts’ who claim they can competently lay cables themselves and save heaps of money, but the risks of doing so are enormous. Most States call for a compliance certificate from your licensed tradesperson for electrical work carried out, which will guarantee, among other things, that the work complies with the appropriate Australian Standard AS/NZS3000
